Sigma Nu was founded in 1869 at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. James Frank Hopkins, Judge Greenfield Quarles, and James McIlvaine Riley, the founding members, had an aversion to hazing which they had witnessed among other fraternities in Lexington. Thus, the three founders created the Legion of Honor, which would soon be known as Sigma Nu, around the values of Love, Honor, and Truth and with a strict non-hazing principle.

With a military heritage, Sigma Nu places a great amount of importance in the idea of personal honor. In fact, the Vision Statement of the organization is Excelling with Honor. Sigma Nu’s mission is: To develop ethical leaders inspired by the principles of Love, Honor and Truth; To Foster the personal growth of each man’s mind, heart and character; and To perpetuate lifelong friendships and commitment to the Fraternity.

Through its highly regarded LEAD Program, which focuses on leadership, ethics, achievement, and development, Sigma Nu has initiated over 219,000 members. Currently, over 250 active chapters exist in the United States and Canada, making Sigma Nu an international fraternity. Sigma Nu is, and has always been, more than just a social organization. Its goal has been to excite a drive within its members to be something more. Sigma Nu challenges its members to be Men of Honor.
